Pro-Vision Housing Initiative
A Master Planned Development in the Sunnyside Complete Communities
As one of the first communities in Houston to be platted for African Americans in 1900, Sunnyside has a historic legacy of attracting individuals and families seeking affordable housing in neighborhoods ideally located near the city center with convenient access to multiple job centers such as the Downtown Business District, the Medical Center and Hobby Airport in addition to the Theater District, Museum District and Houston’s professional sports arenas.
Pro-Vision, Inc. has operated a charter school, Pro-Vision Academy, in the Sunnyside community for nearly three decades. Pro-Vision operates an Urban Farm on the property also. In addition to using academics and educational services to impact young lives, Pro-Vision provides programs and outreach services to benefit the broader community. Pro-Vision is proposing to expand their service and commitment to Sunnyside by creating a new master planned community. The organization envisions a transformative development comprised of senior living, multifamily and single-family housing in addition to a community center anchored by Pro-Vision Academy. The development will further Pro-Vision’s mission to inspire hope and purpose into young people, families and communities, through access to academic, economic and social enrichment and allow them to help move themselves out of poverty through this ecosystem.
Sunnyside has a rich heritage of being a resilient predominantly African American community where the community leaders and stakeholders continue the traditions of reinforcing civic pride and promoting community engagement. Through the process of creating the Neighborhood Plan, the community leaders and stakeholders have cited the fact that Sunnyside has a strong demand for affordable housing. However, the aging housing stock and the absence of new higher quality housing compounded by the lack of basic services has led to an abundance of substandard housing. Many of the community stakeholders are actively seeking options to meet the critical need for education, basic services and higher quality affordable housing in the community. The Sunnyside community in southeast Houston was designated by Mayor Sylvester Turner as one of Houston’s Complete Communities. There’s a strong desire to see public and private collaboration and investment in the Sunnyside Complete Community.
The Pro-Vision master planned community and housing initiative would address concerns expressed by the community leaders by bringing much desired public and private investment to the community to provide higher quality affordable housing supported by educational programs and other services.
