Making a Difference with Pro-Vision's Manhood Development Academy

More than 20 years ago the Manhood Development Program became the foundation for what would become Pro-Vision Academy’s Charter Schools fundamental teachings. The program puts emphasis on character development, purposeful living and community involvement among young male students through mentorship and community service. It’s a program that has created a positive change in the lives of many students during their time in the Manhood Development Program and well into the future.

Pro-Vision’s founder Roynell Young was ahead of his time when it came to recognizing the need for mentorship among the young men in his Houston community. A motto of the program is “Discipline is remembering what you want.” The mentors encourage the young men to strive to be better community members, work towards meaningful goals and to lead a moral, purposeful life. They lead by example showing the young men that it isn’t always easy to make the right choices, but it’s much more rewarding in the end.

One of the first students in the academy was David Dixon. In 1993 he was attending Welch Middle School where he participated in football, but struggled with his grades. After his football coach mentioned he might be able to get help with his studies at the Manhood Development Program David decided to check it out. What he found was that the program provided much more than tutoring.

The mentorship that David received from Coach Young and the other leaders proved to be invaluable in many aspects of his life. During a time when David was beginning to be exposed to the negative influences of gang life and violence in his neighborhood, the Manhood Development Program was the positive outlet he needed to stay focused and stay the course.

The leadership, mentorship and encouragement he received inspired David to branch out and start playing basketball as well. He didn’t know it at the time, but it was a decision that would affect his life and career. David’s hard work and focus helped him to hone his skills and ultimately landed him a position as a professional basketball player in Europe for 12 years. While there he met his wife, and they now have a son. What he learned 20 years ago through the Manhood Development Program is still having a positive impact on his life today in his role as a community leader, professional and father.

Today, the Manhood Development Program is still carrying out its mission to provide young men with positive male role models and mentorship. There are now many more programs like it including the White House Initiative My Brother’s Keeper. These programs fill an important need in our communities and help in the development of youth across the country. From their personal lives to careers to community leadership, programs like the Manhood Development Program are showing young students that they have the power to shape their future and decide what kind of men they will become.
