Music in Our Schools Month: Why Music is an Integral Part of Student Life
The National Association for Music Education has officially designated March as Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM®). What once was a small, statewide celebration has transformed into a powerful, month long, wide-reaching celebration of the importance of the availability of music in schools. The National Association for Music Education recognizes the vital role that music plays for students, and Pro-Vision echoes this sentiment. Access to music not only provides students with a creative outlet, but stimulates the brain for higher-level thinking, is linked to higher scholastic achievement, and expands cultural awareness. Providing access to music education is imperative to a holistic education, and Pro-Vision is dedicated to supporting the efforts of The National Association for Music Education by providing access to quality music programs and enriching the lives of our students and benefiting their education as a whole.
Music in Our Schools Month emphasizes the awareness of the crucial role of music in education. The week gives music teachers, music students, and citizens with a passion for music education the opportunity to witness the benefits of providing music education in schools. During Music in Our Schools Month, celebrations are held in many schools, libraries, civic halls and even shopping centers to promote the awareness of the effects that music has on students. Preserving music programs in schools is of prime importance during this time of economic duress in which many music programs are being cut due to budget depletion.
Music programs are indeed of great importance to the young men and young women that attend Pro-Vision. We strive to offer high-quality music programs to augment the educational experience as a whole. Psychologists at the Universities of Wisconsin and California conducted a study with results linking the study of music to achievements in math, engineering and science. Music education is also linked to success in language and advanced speech, higher aptitudes in reading, and highly developed critical thinking skills.
Alongside the academic successes interwoven with music education are the superior personal effects that music education provides. Students participating the the music programs at Pro-Vision are immersed in awareness of other cultures, allowing the student to feel empathy and a connection with others. This encourages students to participate in their communities rather than merely observing.
In addition to the critically important music programs currently offered at Pro-Vision, there are planned additions. Students will soon be able to participate in an all-male choir, marching band and jazz ensemble. Pro-Vision is passionate about maintaining music programs in schools, and supporting their expansion to enrich the experiences of young men and women culturally, academically and emotionally.
